Maryland Veteran Benefits

Maryland offers state-level benefits that complement your federal VA benefits. Use this page to quickly see what’s available and where to apply.

Quick Facts

  • Property Tax: Full exemption on real property tax for a primary residence if you’re 100% service-connected P&T or unemployable; certain unremarried surviving spouses also qualify. Apply through SDAT (state assessor).
  • DMV: “Veteran” license/ID designation; Disabled Veteran plates. 100% SC veterans get free plates and registration; 50–99% SC get free plates but still pay registration fees/surcharges. Separate placard/plate needed for disability parking.
  • Education: Edward T. & Mary A. Conroy / Jean B. Cryor scholarship for eligible spouses/dependents; veterans generally receive in-state rates at public schools under federal/state policy.
  • Income Tax Notes: VA disability compensation isn’t taxed. Maryland allows a military retirement subtraction (up to $12,500 if under 55; $20,000 if 55+ for TY2025—see Comptroller).

Property Tax Relief

Maryland law exempts from real property tax the dwelling house and surrounding yard of a veteran who is VA-rated 100% permanent and total service-connected (or unemployable). Unremarried surviving spouses of an eligible veteran or of a Service member killed in the line of duty may also qualify. Apply with the State Department of Assessments & Taxation (SDAT); include your VA rating letter and required forms.

DMV & License Benefits

Add the Veteran designation to your MD driver license/ID at MDOT MVA with proof of honorable service. Military plates include Disabled Veteran options. If you’re 100% SC, plates and registration are free; if you’re 50–99% SC, plates are free but standard registration fees/surcharges still apply. Use a disability placard/plate for parking privileges.

Education Benefits

The Edward T. & Mary A. Conroy / Jean B. Cryor program provides tuition/fee support at Maryland institutions for eligible spouses and dependents (categories include deceased, POW/MIA, and certain disabled veterans). Public colleges generally offer in-state tuition to qualifying veterans and dependents under federal law and state policy—confirm details with your school’s veterans office.

Hunting & Fishing

Maryland residents who are 100% SC, unemployable, or former POWs may receive a complimentary lifetime hunting license (includes bow, muzzleloader, furbearer permits). Complimentary fishing/oystering licenses are also available. Obtain at a DNR Licensing & Registration Service Center (certain stamps not included).

Spouse & Dependent Benefits

Unremarried surviving spouses may continue or qualify for the statewide property tax exemption if they own and occupy the dwelling. Eligible spouses/dependents can apply for the Conroy/Cryor education benefit; many counties also offer local property-tax credits—check your county finance office.
