Explore Our 2026 VA Disability Calculator
The 2026 VA Disability Calculator shows you exactly how the VA builds your combined disability rating, step by step, using the real “Whole Person Method.” If you’ve ever added 50% + 30% and expected 80%, this calculator shows you why the VA never does it that way.
How to Use the 2026 VA Disability Calculator
Step 1 — Add Your Ratings
Type a rating (like 50) in the box or click one of the quick buttons (+10%, +20%, etc.). The calculator automatically sorts them from highest to lowest, just like the VA does.
Step 2 — Watch the Bars Fill In
Each disability rating fills in layers of the “whole person” bar:
- White bar = ratings already applied.
- Red bar = the new rating being added.
- Dark bar = remaining efficiency after VA math.
This visual layout helps explain why each additional rating contributes less than the one before it.
Step 3 — Understand VA Math
The VA never simply adds percentages together. Each rating applies only to what remains of the “whole person.”
For example, if you already have 50%:
- 50% disability leaves 50% efficiency.
- A new 30% applies only to that remaining 50%.
- 30% of 50% equals 15%, not 30%.
Step 4 — Add Your Dependents
Select your dependents (spouse, parents, children). The 2026 VA Disability Calculator uses that information to estimate your monthly VA compensation based on current VA pay tables.
Step 5 — Review Your Results
- Raw combined rating — before rounding.
- Final VA rating — rounded to the nearest 10%.
- Remaining efficiency — what’s left of the whole person.
Step 6 — Monthly Pay
Once ratings and dependents are entered, you’ll see your estimated 2026 VA disability monthly pay, calculated using official VA methodology.
Step 7 — Reset Anytime
Use the Reset button to clear entries and test new scenarios. There is no limit to how many times you can use the calculator.
Why This Tool Matters
VA math is confusing because it doesn’t follow normal math rules. It uses layered percentages, leftover efficiency, rounding, and special factors like bilateral conditions. The 2026 VA Disability Calculator shows your combined rating the same way the VA does — visually, accurately, and without guesswork.
Layered VA Math — Visual Bar Calculator
Add each disability rating (highest first). Bars show how the VA layers efficiency. WHITE = previous, RED = new, dark = remaining.
Rounding: nearest 10% per 38 CFR §4.25, and 95%+ = 100%. Replace the placeholder pay table with official 2025 rates from VA.gov for accuracy.
Layered VA Math & 2025 Monthly Pay
Enter each of your ratings from highest to lowest. We’ll apply the official VA “whole person” math, round to the nearest 10%, and estimate your 2025 monthly pay based on your family status.
The first rating hits the full 100% “whole person.” Each rating after that is only applied to what’s left. The bar below shows how much of you VA considers “disabled” versus what they say is still “whole.”
2026 VA Disability Math Explained
The 2026 VA Disability Calculator shows you how the VA builds your combined rating using the
“Whole Person Method,” which shrinks every percentage as your total rating climbs.
That’s why 50% + 30% never equals 80% — and why veterans often feel like VA math doesn’t make sense at first.
How It Actually Works
• You start at 100% whole.
• Your highest rating is applied first.
• Each additional rating applies only to the “leftover” percentage of your body.
• The higher your total rating gets, the less each new rating counts.
Example: 50% leaves you 50% “un-disabled.” Your next 30% applies only to that
remaining 50% — so it’s really only 15%. Final result = 65%, and
the VA rounds it to 70%.
That’s exactly what the 2026 VA Disability Calculator is built to show — in plain English, with real VA math.
Why It Feels Rigged
• Ratings get smaller as you go higher.
• The VA always rounds to the nearest 10%.
• The bilateral factor (arms/legs on both sides) adds weird bonus math.
• Most veterans end up feeling like the math “short-changes” them.
Why You Need a Calculator
VA math can’t be done with normal addition or a phone calculator. The system uses shrinking
percentages, rounding rules, and exceptions — which is why the numbers almost never match what veterans expect.
Our 2026 VA Disability Calculator follows the VA’s official rating method so you can see your
real combined rating instantly, understand what the VA will round it to, and estimate your
2026 monthly pay based on dependents.
2026 VA Disability Math Breakdown
The 2026 VA Disability Calculator is built to show veterans exactly how the VA calculates combined ratings using the official “Whole Person Method.” VA math does not add straight — each condition is layered against what’s left of your ability. Our calculator follows the real rules, applies the bilateral factor when appropriate, accounts for dependents, then rounds to the nearest 10% so you see the rating the VA will actually assign.

How VA Disability Math Really Works
- Start at 100% efficient. Apply your highest rating first.
- Layer the rest. Each additional rating applies only to the remaining efficiency.
- Continue highest → lowest until every condition is applied.
- Round to the nearest 10%. 1–4 rounds down; 5–9 rounds up.
Step-by-Step Example (No Bilateral)
Ratings: 50%, 30%, 20%
- 100% − 50% = 50% efficiency remaining.
- 30% of 50% = 15% → disability now 65%.
- 20% of 35% = 7% → disability now 72%.
- Round 72% → 70% combined rating.
Bilateral Factor (Arms & Legs)
When paired limbs are both service-connected, the VA applies a bilateral factor before continuing the math. The 2026 VA Disability Calculator applies this automatically so you don’t have to guess.
Monthly Pay (2026)
Your final combined rating determines your monthly compensation. The 2026 VA Disability Calculator estimates pay using official tables and adjusts for dependents.

Child-Dependent Scenarios With Children
At ratings of 30% and higher, VA pays more when you have qualified dependents (children). Below are 2026 amounts for common “with children” setups. First, a quick 100%-rating comparison; then a full table showing Veteran + 1…5 children.
“Vet + 5 Children” uses the official per-additional-child (under 18) add-on at 100% ($109.11) on top of the base “Vet + 1 Child.” Use the tables below for other ratings and for a child over 18 in school.
