Iowa Veteran Benefits
Iowa offers state-level benefits that complement your federal VA benefits. Use this page to see what’s available and where to apply.
Quick Facts
- Property Tax: Disabled Veteran Homestead Credit equals 100% of the actual tax levy on a qualifying primary residence for veterans rated 100% service-connected (including IU at 100%). Surviving spouses on DIC also qualify. Apply by July 1 with your assessor.
- DMV: “Veteran” designation available on driver license/ID. Iowa offers military plates; certain plates (e.g., Disabled Veteran, Purple Heart, Ex-POW, Medal of Honor) get city parking fee waivers. Some license fees are waived for active duty, honorably discharged, and 100% SC veterans.
- Education: No broad statewide veteran tuition waiver. Support includes Children of Fallen Iowa Service Members scholarships and other IDVA resources; public schools provide in-state rates when using VA education benefits.
- Income Tax Notes: Iowa does not tax VA disability compensation. Military retirement pay is exempt from Iowa income tax; other income may be taxable under Iowa’s flat rate.
Property Tax Relief
Iowa’s Disabled Veteran Homestead Property Tax Credit provides a credit equal to 100% of the actual tax levy on a qualifying homestead (up to ½ acre in city; up to 40 acres outside city limits). Eligibility includes 100% service-connected disability (including IU paid at 100%). Surviving spouses receiving DIC qualify and may continue the credit even after remarriage. File with your county assessor by July 1.
DMV & License Benefits
Add a Veteran designation to your Iowa driver license/ID with acceptable proof of honorable service. Iowa offers multiple military plates; certain plates (Disabled Veteran, Purple Heart, Ex-POW, Medal of Honor) are eligible for city parking fee waivers. Iowa also provides a military fee waiver for some driver license transactions for active duty, honorably discharged veterans, and veterans with a permanent 100% service-connected disability. A special Disabled Veteran registration fee exemption applies in limited cases when the vehicle was provided under 38 U.S.C. §§1901–1903.
Education Benefits
Iowa does not offer a universal veteran tuition waiver. State support includes the Children of Fallen Iowa Service Members Scholarship and related programs administered with IDVA. Public institutions classify many veterans/dependents for in-state tuition when using federal VA education benefits (Post-9/11 GI Bill®, Fry Scholarship, DEA). Connect with your school’s veterans office for certification.
Hunting & Fishing
Iowa offers low-cost Armed Forces licenses for veterans who served on federal active duty (e.g., annual fishing or combo license at $5 plus a processing fee). Separate reduced/disabled programs are available; check Iowa DNR for eligibility and documentation.
Spouse & Dependent Benefits
Surviving spouses on DIC may newly qualify for, or continue, the Disabled Veteran Homestead Credit, including after remarriage. Dependents of fallen service members may be eligible for state scholarships through IDVA and federal benefits (DEA, Fry Scholarship).
