Alaska Veteran Benefits
Alaska offers state-level benefits that complement your federal VA benefits. Below is a clear breakdown of what you may qualify for and where to apply.
Quick Facts
- Property Tax: Up to the first $150,000 of assessed value on a primary residence may be exempt for veterans with a 50%+ service-connected disability; administered by your municipality (apply by local deadline).
- DMV: Veteran designation available on AK driver license/ID; specialty plates (including Disabled Veteran). Disabled plates can be issued at no cost; parking privileges require a separate form.
- Education: University of Alaska system supports military students; Alaska provides a Dependent Tuition Waiver for spouses/dependents of service members who died in the line of duty, were POW, or KIA (undergraduate tuition & fees).
- Income Tax Notes: No state personal income tax in Alaska.
Property Tax Relief
Real property owned and occupied as your primary residence may be exempt from municipal property tax on up to $150,000 of assessed value if you have a VA-rated, service-connected disability of 50% or more. Apply with your local assessor by the municipal deadline. In many municipalities, a surviving spouse age 60+ may continue the exemption—confirm locally (see Sources).
DMV & License Benefits
Alaska offers a Veteran designation on driver licenses/ID cards (provide proof of honorable service). Specialty plates are available for veterans, Disabled Veterans, and certain family categories. Disabled Veteran plates are available and can be issued at no cost; if you need disability parking privileges, submit the required medical/parking form in addition to your plate application.
Education Benefits
The University of Alaska system provides veteran and military student support; active-duty tuition may be capped at $250/credit at participating campuses. Alaska’s Veterans’ Dependent Tuition Waiver grants a full waiver of undergraduate tuition and fees within the UA system to eligible spouses and dependents of service members who died in the line of duty, were listed as POW, or were KIA.
Hunting & Fishing
Resident disabled veterans with a 50%+ service-connected disability may receive a complimentary, permanent identification card to hunt, sport fish, or trap (meets residency and documentation requirements).
Spouse & Dependent Benefits
Surviving spouses may be able to continue the municipal property tax exemption (often age and residency conditions apply). Eligible spouses and dependents may receive a full UA undergraduate tuition and fee waiver under the state’s Dependent Tuition Waiver program.
