New Hampshire Veteran Benefits

New Hampshire offers state-level benefits that complement your federal VA benefits. Here’s a clear breakdown of what you may qualify for and where to apply.

Quick Facts

  • Property Tax: No statewide exemption. Cities/towns offer tax credits under RSA 72: standard/optional Veterans’ Credit (commonly $50–$750) and a separate Service-Connected Total Disability Credit (standard $700; municipalities may adopt $701–$4,000). Apply with your local assessor (PA-29) by April 15.
  • DMV: “Veteran” indicator available on driver license/ID (RSA 263:40). Veteran and Disabled Veteran plates offered; DV plates are generally limited to one vehicle and require proof of total and permanent service-connected disability. Disability parking needs a placard or accessibility symbol.
  • Education: Higher Education Scholarship for Orphans of Veterans (state program) and USNH tuition waiver for children of totally & permanently disabled NH veterans at University System of NH schools.
  • Income Tax Notes: New Hampshire has no tax on wage income. The Interest & Dividends tax was repealed effective January 1, 2025.

Property Tax Relief

New Hampshire provides municipal tax credits (not exemptions) for veterans. The Standard/Optional Veterans’ Tax Credit is commonly set between $50 and $750 off your annual bill (amount set by your municipality). A separate Service-Connected Total Disability Credit provides at least $700 and can be increased locally up to $4,000. Surviving spouses may qualify under related statutes. File form PA-29 with your city/town assessor between January 1 and April 15; some combat-service credits have special timing. See Sources for statute and state guidance.

DMV & License Benefits

Add a Veteran indicator to your NH driver license/ID with proof of honorable service (RSA 263:40). NH offers multiple military plates, including Veteran and Disabled Veteran. DV plates generally require a VA determination of total and permanent service-connected disability and are typically limited to one vehicle; standard registration rules apply. Purchase of Veteran decals is coordinated through the state veterans’ office. For ADA parking, obtain a disability placard or plate with the accessibility symbol through the DMV.

Education Benefits

The state’s Higher Education Scholarship for Orphans of Veterans supports eligible children of NH service members who died on active duty or from a service-connected cause; recent updates also allow free tuition at USNH colleges for eligible orphans. Separately, the USNH Tuition Waiver for Children of Disabled NH Veterans reduces tuition for children of totally & permanently disabled NH veterans at University System institutions. Coordinate with your school’s veterans services to stack state and federal benefits.

Hunting & Fishing

Resident veterans who are 100% service-connected, permanent and total may receive a free, perpetual Fish & Game license (one-time $10 administrative fee). Veterans with 80%–99% service-connected disability may purchase a half-price lifetime license (plus $10 one-time admin fee). Separate tags/stamps may still be required.

Spouse & Dependent Benefits

Surviving spouses may qualify for municipal veterans’ tax credits under RSA 72 categories. Eligible children may receive the state Orphans of Veterans scholarship and, where applicable, USNH tuition waivers. Check with your town assessor and campus financial-aid offices.
