Quick Facts

  • Property Tax: Full property tax exemption on your primary residence for veterans who are VA-rated 100% permanent and total, individually unemployable (IU), or receive specially adapted housing (SAH) benefits; unremarried surviving spouses may qualify. Apply with your local assessor (see Sources).
  • DMV: Veteran designation available on MI driver license/ID. Disabled Veteran (DV) plates: 100% or P&T/IU may receive a permanent DV plate and register one passenger vehicle with the registration tax waived; 50–99% may receive a standard DV plate (normal renewal cycle). A disability placard/tab is required for accessible parking.
  • Education: Children of Veterans Tuition Grant (CVTG) provides up to $2,800 per academic year for eligible dependents at approved Michigan institutions.
  • Income Tax Notes: VA disability compensation isn’t taxed. Military retirement pay may be deducted/exempt from Michigan income tax (see Treasury guidance).

Property Tax Relief

Under MCL 211.7b, Michigan exempts real property used and owned as a homestead by a qualifying disabled veteran (100% P&T, IU, or SAH) or the veteran’s unremarried surviving spouse. File the state Affidavit for Disabled Veterans Exemption (Form 5107) with your city or township assessor by local deadlines; include your VA rating/award documentation. Confirm any annual filing or renewal requirements with your assessor.

DMV & License Benefits

Add the Veteran designation to your Michigan license/ID at a Secretary of State office with proof of honorable service. Michigan offers Disabled Veteran plates: veterans with a total or permanently total rating may obtain a permanent DV plate and register one private passenger vehicle with the registration tax waived; veterans rated 50–99% may obtain one standard DV plate (regular renewal rules apply). A disability placard/tab is required to use accessible parking.

Education Benefits

The Children of Veterans Tuition Grant (CVTG) provides up to $2,800 per academic year (amount varies by enrollment level) for eligible dependents of certain deceased or disabled Michigan veterans. Funding may be used at approved Michigan colleges and universities; apply through Michigan Student Aid and your school’s financial aid office.

Hunting & Fishing

Michigan residents who are veterans with a 100% VA disability rating may receive hunting and fishing licenses with fees waived. Carry proof of eligibility and follow DNR application steps.

Spouse & Dependent Benefits

Unremarried surviving spouses may qualify for the homestead property tax exemption. Eligible children may receive CVTG tuition assistance; check your institution for additional campus-based aid.
