Kansas Veteran Benefits
Kansas offers state-level benefits that complement your federal VA benefits. Use this page to see what’s available and where to apply.
Quick Facts
- Property Tax: Kansas provides a refund program (K-40SVR) for seniors and disabled veterans (generally 50%+ service-connected) with income and home-value limits; apply through the Kansas Department of Revenue. No statewide disabled-veteran property tax exemption is in effect as of the date below.
- DMV: “Veteran” designation available on KS driver license/ID (proof of honorable service). Initial Disabled Veteran plate has no registration fee; property tax on the vehicle still applies.
- Education: Kansas Military Service Scholarship (tuition/fees) for eligible veterans; Kansas Hero’s Scholarship waives tuition/fees for certain spouses/dependents of fallen/disabled. Current service members, spouses, and dependents are treated as in-state for tuition at public institutions.
- Income Tax Notes: VA disability compensation isn’t taxed by Kansas. Military retirement pay is exempt. Disabled veterans may claim an additional personal exemption on the KS return.
Property Tax Relief
The Senior or Disabled Veteran Property Tax Refund (K-40SVR) refunds part of the property tax paid on an owner-occupied Kansas home when income and appraised-value limits are met. Eligible veterans typically have a VA service-connected rating of 50%+; certain surviving spouses may also qualify. File annually with the Kansas Department of Revenue by the posted deadline (see “Sources”). As of the date below, Kansas does not have a statewide disabled-veteran property tax exemption.
DMV & License Benefits
Add a Veteran designation to your license/ID by presenting acceptable proof (DD-214, NGB-22, VA ID). Kansas offers multiple military plates; the Disabled Veteran plate has no registration fee for the initial plate (vehicle property tax still due). Additional DV plates pay standard fees. Apply through your county treasurer/tag office or KS Dept. of Revenue.
Education Benefits
The Kansas Military Service Scholarship covers tuition and required fees at public schools for eligible veterans who served in qualifying hostile-fire deployments. The Kansas Hero’s Scholarship waives tuition/fees for eligible spouses and dependents of certain fallen or disabled servicemembers. Current servicemembers, spouses, and dependents are treated as residents for tuition at Kansas public institutions. Work with your campus veterans office to coordinate with VA benefits.
Hunting & Fishing
Resident disabled veterans with a 30%+ service-connected rating may receive free, permanent hunting and fishing licenses (application and documentation required). Nonresident discounts generally do not apply.
Spouse & Dependent Benefits
Surviving spouses may qualify for the K-40SVR property tax refund (subject to income/home-value limits and program rules). Education support includes the Kansas Hero’s Scholarship for eligible spouses/dependents; dependents using federal VA education benefits typically receive in-state tuition at public institutions.
