Indiana Veteran Benefits

Indiana offers state-level benefits that complement your federal VA benefits. Below is a clear breakdown of what you may qualify for and where to apply.

Quick Facts

  • Property Tax: Two statewide homestead deductions on a primary residence — $24,960 (wartime service + ≥10% service-connected) and $14,000 (total disability, or age 62+ with ≥10% disability, home AV under $240,000). Some veterans qualify to combine for $38,960. Apply with your county auditor.
  • DMV: “Veteran” indicator on driver license/ID with proof of honorable service. Military plates (Hoosier Veteran, Disabled Hoosier Veteran, etc.). No additional fee for the Disabled Hoosier Veteran plate, but regular registration/fees still apply.
  • Education: Tuition & Fee Exemption (CVO) covers up to 124 credit hours at Indiana public colleges for eligible children of disabled veterans/Purple Heart recipients (time and category limits apply).
  • Income Tax Notes: VA disability compensation isn’t taxed. Military retirement pay is fully deductible from Indiana income; active/reserve military pay has expanded state deductions.

Property Tax Relief

Indiana provides two main disabled-veteran deductions on your homestead: $24,960 for veterans with wartime service and a VA service-connected rating of at least 10%, and $14,000 for veterans who are totally disabled (or age 62+ with ≥10% disability) when the home’s assessed value is under $240,000. Some veterans qualify to combine these for a total of $38,960. Apply at your county auditor’s office. Unused deduction amounts can roll to personal property and then to vehicle excise tax credits; some survivor carryover applies—confirm locally (see Sources).

DMV & License Benefits

Add a Veteran indicator to your Indiana license/ID with a DD-214 (other-than-dishonorable). Indiana issues multiple military plates; the Disabled Hoosier Veteran plate has no additional plate fee, but you must still pay normal registration/Taxes. Eligibility is verified by IDVA (State Form 32584). Separate medical certification is required for disability parking.

Education Benefits

Indiana’s Tuition & Fee Exemption (CVO) provides up to 124 credit hours of tuition and regularly assessed fees at public institutions for eligible children of disabled veterans and Purple Heart recipients. Approved students have 8 academic years to use benefits once started. Some limited support is available at participating private non-profits for recent graduates. Apply via the Indiana Commission for Higher Education and your campus veterans office.

Hunting & Fishing

Resident disabled veterans can get a reduced-fee DAV small-game & fishing license ($2.75 annual or $27.50 10-year; stamps/deer/turkey not included). Application and VA disability documentation required through Indiana DNR.

Spouse & Dependent Benefits

Surviving spouses may continue certain disabled-veteran property-tax deductions when eligibility conditions are met. Dependents may qualify for the CVO tuition exemption at state schools (category/rules apply). Check IDVA/CHE for documentation and timelines.
