Arizona Veteran Benefits
Arizona adds state-level benefits on top of your federal VA entitlements — including income/valuation-limited property tax relief for disabled veterans, MVD perks, tuition waivers for certain spouses and dependents, and outdoor license options.
Quick Facts
- Property Tax: Arizona provides a disability-based property tax exemption that’s limited by household income and assessed value and is prorated by your VA disability percentage. Apply with your county assessor. (Partial reduction; not a blanket exemption.)
- DMV: “VETERAN” designation available on AZ driver license/ID; multiple military/veteran plates through ADOT MVD.
- Education: State tuition-waiver scholarships for eligible spouses/children of service members (and certain veterans under statute) at AZ public universities and community colleges.
- Income Tax Notes: Arizona does not tax VA disability compensation.
Property Tax Relief
Under A.R.S. § 42-11111, Arizona allows a property tax exemption for honorably discharged veterans with a service- or nonservice-connected disability. The exemption amount is set annually, is subject to income and assessed-value limits, and for veterans is prorated by VA disability percentage. Apply with your county assessor and submit the required disability certification/affidavit forms by the local deadline.
DMV & License Benefits
Add the “VETERAN” indicator to your Arizona DL/ID via ADOT MVD (bring proof of honorable service). Arizona also offers many military/veteran plates, including options that recognize service branches and awards. Start the designation or plate application through MVD or an authorized office.
Education Benefits
Arizona provides Tuition Waiver Scholarships at AZ public universities and community colleges for eligible spouses and children of service members (including National Guard and U.S. Armed Forces) who were killed in the line of duty or died from injuries suffered in the line of duty; program limits and verification apply under A.R.S. § 15-1808. Recent ABOR policy also governs funding/administration. Check with ADVS and your school’s financial aid office.
Hunting & Fishing
Resident veterans with a 100% service-connected disability may qualify for a complimentary disabled veteran combination license. Reduced-fee licenses are available for veterans with lower disability ratings and for Purple Heart recipients. Apply with Arizona Game & Fish.
Spouse & Dependent Benefits
Major support includes the state Tuition Waiver Scholarship for eligible survivors at public institutions. County-level property tax exemptions are administered locally; surviving spouses may qualify under separate widow/widower provisions — verify with your assessor.
